Moving into a New Place – Get Organized!

If you’re moving into a new place, organization is key. The process may seem daunting, but having everything planned out prior to moving day will save a lot of time – and stress – in the long run.

If you’re gearing up to relocate to a new place, here are some great tips on how to organize your move so that everything goes smoothly:

1. Confirm a moving date

The most obvious thing, if you are moving into a new place, is to establish and confirm a moving date. Be sure that the current residents of the home are made aware of this date. If you have bought a place, this shouldn’t be an issue, but with lease-based arrangements, it’s not uncommon for there to be overlap with people moving in and out of a unit. Coordination will help you avoid such a problem.

2. Make a to-do list

Taking the time to put everything down on paper will ensure that you don’t forget anything while you go through the moving process. Your checklist could include specific tasks such as packing, ordering supplies, or hiring a mover. But it can also cover other, equally important tasks, such as arranging a day off work, filing a change of address form, organizing your childrens’ school records and so on.

3. Pack well ahead of time

Really, you should be coming up with an efficient strategy as soon as you know you’re moving. If you leave packing until the last minute, you’ll be ripping your hair out trying to get everything finished in time for the move. You’re also much more likely to forget things, and because you’ve rushed to pack, you’ve likely done so unmethodically, which makes unpacking that much more difficult and chaotic.

4. Don’t be a hoarder

If you don’t use it in your current home, you probably won’t use it in your new one. Sell, donate or get rid of things! This is one of the best ways to organize for a move, because it leaves you with less things to pack (and then unpack, once you reach your new place). Failing to get rid of things that clutter your current home is a recipe for repeating the same pattern in your new home.

5. Hire a great moving company

Organizing your move is made that much easier when you hire a company you can trust to get the job done professionally. This eliminates the stress associated with one of the biggest aspects of the moving process – the move itself!
