Moving Day Kit – Why you need one

While moving is extremely exciting, it can also be overwhelming if you fail to plan ahead. Moving day kits are vital because they can prevent you from scrambling and unpacking everything in search of your essential items. Here are some tips on how to prepare a moving day kit:

Bathroom Moving Day Kit

Once you get to your new place, you may not have the time or energy to get everything unpacked, but you’ll still need to shower, brush your teeth, and not smell like a mover. Make sure you have the following items ready and separate from the rest of your belongings, in your bathroom moving day kit:

  • Toiletries, like shampoo, soap, toothbrush, tooth paste, deodorant, toilet tissue, etc.
  • Towels for every person in your family
  • Either a body scrubber or wash cloths
  • Bathtub mat and shower curtain
  • Hand towel
  • Hair ties

Bedroom Moving Day Kit

After you get to your new location, make sure you have the right household goods in place for a decent nights rest, such as:

  • A robe, slippers and pajamas
  • Pillows and linens
  • An extra set of clothes for everyone
  • An alarm clock
  • A hamper or clothes basket to put your dirty clothes in. (It’s a great idea to pack the master bedroom essentials in the same hamper because these items will need to be put away as soon as possible.)

Kitchen Moving Day Kit

Since you and your family will need food on moving day and a few days after, make sure your moving day kit includes the following kitchen items:

  • Disposable cups, plates and some utensils.
  • Dish sponge and soap
  • A cutting knife and large spoon for serving
  • Dish towel
  • Coffee pot

Moving Day Kit for Small Children

Make sure you include the following items in your moving day kit:

  • Diaper changing supplies, if required
  • Favourite books or toys
  • Additional blankets
  • Kids’ snacks and/or formula
  • One or two outfits and pajamas

Moving Day Kit for Pets

Like kids, pets should have special consideration in your moving day kit. Make sure you equip it with the following:

  • Leash or carrier
  • Pet dishes and food
  • Treats
  • Litter and litter box

Moving Day Kit for Your Car

The goal of your moving kit is to include the items that you will need all day, every day, while you transition into your new place. You may want to pack some of these items in your car:

  • Medication
  • First Aid Kit
  • Screwdrivers, hammers, tape measure, picture nails, box cutters, and other tools
  • Flashlight
  • Light bulbs
  • Water filter or reusable water bottles
  • Trash bags, scissors, paper towels, etc.
  • Extension cord
  • Snacks
