OTTAWA CITY GUIDE
Things to do in Ottawa
With a large bi-lingual population, living in Ottawa provides an excellent opportunity to improve your language skills. The city is home to 7 national museums, so you’ll be able to immerse yourself in Canadian culture and history. Annual festivals include Winterlude in February, followed by the world-famous Tulip Festival in spring. The biggest Canada Day celebration in Canada takes place on July 1st and various music festivals are lined up over the summer months, so there’s always something to look forward to.
Ottawa is a golfer’s dream, with more golf courses per capita than most North American cities. It’s also one of the top whitewater destinations in the world, with rafting fun to be had on Ottawa River, Gatineau River and La Riviére Rouge. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, you could take a walk or bike along the beautiful Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or, if you’d simply prefer to watch sports, there are four professional teams in Ottawa to choose from: Ottawa Senators (ice hockey), Ottawa Fury (soccer), Ottawa Champions (baseball) and the Ottawa Redblacks (football).
Dining & Entertainment
Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa Culinary Arts Institute is a world-renowned training school and Ottawa boasts the only campus in Canada. The Institute attracts new chefs to the city and influences the thriving and culturally varied dining experiences on offer. There are plenty of craft breweries that you can take a tour of or visit at your leisure. Byward Market District is a special and unmissable spot. By day, it’s filled with farmers markets and artisans, but at night it transforms into a plethora of bars, clubs and live entertainment.
Things to do in Ottawa with kids
If you’re looking for ways to entertain your kids, Ottawa has so much to offer. The National Arts Centre always has something magical in their kids’ programming and the French Youth Theatre is outstanding. You can get your little ones to burn off some energy at Cosmic Adventures or Funhaven (large indoor play spaces), along with swimming pools and parks, outdoor skating rinks, and Calypso Waterpark – the largest theme waterpark in Canada! If you want to get away from the city, there are several farms with kid-friendly events, petting zoos, pick your own, and everyone should visit a local sugar bush at least once, to see maple syrup being collected. Ottawa is lucky to have several to choose from.
Dog-friendly activities to do in Ottawa
Ottawa is a dog-friendly city, but they must be kept on-leash in most of the downtown area. However, you won’t have to go far to find a great variety of off-leash trails and parks, something to suit every activity level, including Conroy Pit, known by the locals as “Doggie Disneyland”. Be sure to check out Wag, an upscale dog shop and home to the Doggin’ It Café, Ottawa’s first pet-friendly café, where you can choose something for your pup from the Treat Menu.
